Yasha-bishaku is a deciduous shrub of the Grossulariaceae, or currant family. It attaches itself to the trunk of deciduous trees by taking root.
After producing yellow-green flowers, it has stingy-haired round fruits, which make it popular as bonsai. The plant’s Japanese common name is said to derive from where it grows, so high that is inaccessible to humans but possibly to female demons, yasha; and from the shape of its fruit, which is thought to be related to a sake utensil, hishaku.
