Its Japanese common name, "kai-no-ki," derives from its neat appearance with right-angled branches and neatly arranged small leaves, reminiscent of the square writing of Chinese characters.
The shrub grows to 10 meters or more.
Its flowers bloom around April and its leaves change colors beautifully in autumn.
