A perennial of the genus Paeonia in the family Paeoniaceae.
The genus Paeonia, once in the Ranunculaceae, was separated and is now in the Paeoniaceae with only this genus.
In fall, the plant’s fruit ripens and turns into sterile red seeds and fertile black seeds.
