The checkerberry is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to northeastern North America. This plant spreads by creeping along the ground with its stems,and its leaves turn red when exposed to cold air. It produces nodding, bell-shaped white flowers and bears plenty of scarlet berries that last through winter and into spring.

Checkerberry prefers full sun to partial shade.
