A mountain hydrangea that is native to Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku. (The variety name, Iyo no jujisei, means “Iyo’s Crux.” Iyo is the old name for Ehime, and Crux is a constellation that resembles a cross, the shape of the sterile florets.)
The plant produces multi-colored lacecap flowers that range in hue from blue to purple and red.
The flower color depends on the pH of the soil.
