Found in the low mountains of the Kanto region and in western Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. Belongs to the family Hydrangeaceae.
Its Japanese name, ko-ajisai, (meaning “small hydrangea”), derives from its smaller than ordinary size for a hydrangea.
