Coptis trifoliolata (Koshiji oren)

A perennial of the family Ranunculaceae.
Produces flowers in early spring that resemble those of ume (Japanese apricot). An evergreen plant that has lustrous, trefoil leaves. The first half of its name, koshiji, suggests the snowy, cold region of Japan along the Sea of Japan, where this plant grows in abundance.
