Begonia grandis (Hardy begonia, shu-kaido)

¥1,000 (incl. tax)

Native to China and naturalized in Japan in the Edo period (1603 to 1868).  A hardy begonia that produces white flowers.

The plant’s Japanese common name, shu-kaido (meaning “autumn hall crabapple”), is said to derive from its flowers, which appear between summer and early fall and resemble those of kaido, or hall crabapples (Malus halliana), a spring-flowering species native to China.

Keep this plant moist, especially in summer!
