Serissa japonica (Yae kochogi)
¥2,400 (incl. tax)
An evergreen dwarf shrub of the Rubiaceae, or madder, family that gets its name in part for being double-flowered. Besides yae kochogi, it is also called a dwarf hakuchoge or dwarf snowrose. Even in a small pot, the shrub offers the refined elegance of an aged tree. It grows relatively quickly and absorbs water well. It prefers sunlight and good drainage. Make sure it doesn’t run out of water, especially in summer. The plant gives off a faint fragrance when its branches or roots are cut. Well suited for use as an ornamental or bonsai.
[Tips for growing yae kochogi]
Yae kochogi prefer full sun, but exposure to strong direct sun can damage its leaves and flowers. To protect it from the strong afternoon sun, place the plant in partial shade where it will still get enough sunlight.
This shrub takes up water well. Prepare well-drained soil and maintain a proper amount of moisture. Water the plant when the topsoil becomes dry to avoid excessive dryness. It is important to water generously, especially in summer when the soil can easily dry out.
Prune the plant regularly as it grows quickly.
Cut away unnecessary branches and leaves to control the plant’s growth as necessary.
An easy to grow shrub, recommended for beginners.
