Nageia nagi (Asian bayberry, nagi)
An evergreen tree of the family Podocarpaceae.
‘Nagi’ in Japanese is said to derive from ‘nagu,’ a verb often used in sentences such as umi ga nagu (meaning “the sea calms down”) or “kunan wo nagi taosu” (“to conquer hardship”).
Worshipped as a holy tree at Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tradition has it that pilgrims to Ise Shrine kept nagi leaves as amulets for protection during their journey.
