Chelonopsis yagiharana (Japanese turtlehead, ashitaka jako-so)
This variety of Japanese turtlehead is a beautiful sanyaso wildflower in the Lamiaceae, or mint, family. The plant is smaller than the common Japanese turtlehead (Chelonopsis moschata) with abundant standing hairs profusely on the stems, leafstalks, leaves, and calyces. The plant’s lip-like dark pink flowers, with gracefully curving tepals, are captivating.
- Tips for growing Ashitaka jako-so
This plant prefers a bright spot, but not in full sun. It will perform well in a partially shaded spot, which should be sunny between spring and fall.
Use a well-drained soil and provide plenty of water when the topsoil becomes dry. Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent root rot.
Prune moderately in spring or fall to encourage growth and keep the plant in good shape. Pruning of branches and foliage will contribute to healthy growth.
Graceful and fragrant, this plant is a perfect addition to flower arrangements in Japanese tea-ceremony rooms.
