This turtlehead variety grows wild on Mt. Takakuma in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan. The plant produces large lemon-yellow flowers with almost upright stems and shiny, lush, broad leaves.
Tips for growing Takakuma hototogisu
This plant prefers a bright spot, but not in full sun. It will perform well in partial to full shade.
An acidic, well-drained soil is ideal, so prepare a light soil that contains little lime.
Avoid excessive moisture, but water as necessary to prevent the soil from drying out, especially in the dry season.
Once the plant has flowered, remove faded flowers and dead parts to encourage flower buds for the next flowering season.
As a member of the toad lily family, the plant is not difficult to grow, but requires special care in summer when the plant can suffer from leaf scorch if not kept in a cool, semi-shaded location.
