Eupatorium makinoi (Akabana hiyodori-so)

The akabana hiyodori-so is a perennial in the Asteraceae, or aster, family. The plant produces beautiful clusters of red flowers, each consisting of five tubular florets.

Its Japanese common name derives from the time of year when the plant is in flower, when hiyodori, or bulbul, is singing.

Choose a well-ventilated spot that receives moderate sunlight.

The soil should be neutral to slightly alkaline.  Prepare a well-drained, and well-retaining soil, mixing it with humus if necessary to improve the quality of the soil.

Water sufficiently before the soil dries out, but avoid lack of water and excessive moisture.  Pay particular attention to watering during the hot summer months..

Fertilizing before flowering will encourage more and brighter flowers.

Once the plant has flowered, prune back the dead parts, to help the plant form new buds. Regular pruning will also help keep the plant healthy.
